Draw Mountains

Mountain 1

Start by adding a new layer.

Choose the Brush tool with 100% hardness, size ~20.

Color: set to black/white, then go to More and change the V to 80%.

In the new layer (not Background) draw the mountain silhouette (the highest, in the back). Then use the Paint Bucket to fill it in (click 2x so no gaps).

Rename the layer “1”.

Mountain 2

  1. Change the color to black/white, with V set to 60%
  1. Insert another new layer, name it “2”.
  2. Draw in the mountain silhouette with the Brush tool (lower, more in front)
  3. Fill in with the Paint Bucket (click 2x so no gaps).

Mountain 3

  • Change the color to darker grey, V at 40%
  • Insert a new layer, name it “3”.
  • Draw the mountains with the Brush tool.
  • Fill in with the Paint Bucket tool

Mountains 4

  • Change the color to darker grey, V at 20%
  • Insert a new layer, name it “4”.
  • Draw the mountains with the Brush tool.
  • Fill in with the Paint Bucket tool

Smoother edges

  • Select any of the mountain layers and go to Effects > Noise > Median.
  • Adjust the Radius slider so the mountain edges are smoother out a bit.
  • Then go to Effects > Repeat Median for the other mountain layers.

Trees

  1. In a new layer “trees”, draw a black area at the front.
  2. Draw rough tree outlines with the Brush tool.
  1. Go to Effects > Distort > Crystalize.
  1. Repeat Crystalize effect for mountains “4” layer.

Sky

  1. Select the Gradient tool.
  2. Set your colors to any 2 colors.
  3. In the Background layer, drag out the gradient.

Snow

Make the mountains “1” layer active.

Select the Wand tool.

Click on the mountains.

Insert a new layer, name it “snow”. Make sure it’s at the top…

Select the Brush tool and make sure your color is white.

Brush near the tops of the mountains like this…

CTRL+D to deselect.

    Clouds

    1. Insert a new layer, name it “clouds”.
    2. Move it below mountains “1”.
    1. Set your color to white.
    2. Select the Shape Tool > Callout
    3. Draw clouds coming out behind the mountains, overlapping.
    1. Blend the clouds with the sky – double-click on the layer and reduce opacity to ~100.

    Blurs

    With the clouds layer still seleted, go to Effects > Blur > Gaussian Blur … and blur the edges of the clouds a bit (not too much).

    Select the snow layer and go to Effects > Blur > Fragment.

    Painting Effect

    Set colors to default (black & white).

    Insert a new layer at the top, rename it “painting”.

    Go to Effects > Render > Clouds.

    Now go to Effects > Artistic > Oil Painting.

    Change the blend mode for the layer to Overlay

    Here are all your layers…
