Stripes
Start with a new document 500x500px.
Insert a new blank layer.
Click on the front color square and set it to red; the background color should be white.
Select the Gradient Tool.
Click and drag from the top to the bottom of the canvas.
Go to the top-right of the Layers panel and go to more options … and choose Convert to Smart Object.
When you’ve done that, you will now see a icon on the layer thumbnail like this…
Go to Filter > Distort > Wave…
- Change Type to Square.
- Set the Wavelength numbers to “29” and “30”.
- Adjust the top slider a bit to the right.
You should see red and white stripes.
More Filters
Now add 2 more filters to this layer:
- Filter > Distort > Polar Coordinates (default)
- Filter > Distort > Twirl (default)
Candy Shape
Select the Ellipse Marquee tool.
Start clicking in the middle, hold ALT and SHIFT and drag out a circle.
Click on the mask button at the bottom of the Layers panel.
Layer Style
Add layer style Bevel & Emboss…
Play with the settings: depth, size, soften
Check the box for Color Overlay … and then set the color to a light grey. Set blend mode to ‘Multiply’ and play with the opacity.
Highlights
Insert a new blank layer.
Switch your colors so white is the foreground.
Select the Brush tool…
Make it about size 30 and totally soft.
Then draw 2 circles over your candy.
Then add Gaussian Blur to soften it (under Filter > Blurs>…)
You want the highlights to still show but be soft/blended.
Your layers should look like this…
