Open Adope Photoshop. Search for it … open the app.

The first time opening Photoshop on your computer, you will need to sign in, type your student email address from SD33… and Continue

Pin it to the taskbar.

Starting Photo

Copy the photo below (right-click > Copy Image)…

In Photoshop, click on the New File button (or CTRL+N) … it should say the size 690 x 596 px.

If it’s the right size and then click on Create on the bottom right.

Then CTRL+V to paste the photo in.

Save it (CTRL+S) to your OneDrive > COMP 8 > Photoshop folder.

Smart Object

Right-click on the photo layer or go to the “more options” button on the top right of the Layers panel. Then choose to Convert to Smart Object.

It should then have this icon on the layer thumbnail…

Duplicate the layer (CTRL+J).

Find Edges

To create the outlines, go to FILTER > Stylize > Find Edges.

Your image should have an effect like the image shown below.

Your layers should now look like this…

Minimum

Now choose Filter > Other > Minimum. This filter is used to thicken the dark lines. Set to 1 or 2, depending on the size/quality of your photo…

Your layers should look like this…

Cutout

Go to FILTERS > Filter Gallery…

Go into the Artistic folder.

Leave it on the Cutout filter (default) and say OK.

This applies a vector-like effect to the image so it adds some randomness to the edges so that they don’t look like a bunch of squares.

More Color

Select the original photo layer and duplicate it (CTRL+J)

Move the new layer that you just duplicated to the top by clicking and dragging it up to the top – let go when you see the blue line at the top.

Change the blend mode to Overlay.

Own Photo

Double-click on the Smart object icon for your layer thumbnail.

This opens a new tab with the original photo…

Find a photo on the internet and copy it. Paste it in and CTRL+T to resize it to fill/cover the original photo.

[Enter] to apply transformation and close the tab… Save.

You’ll now see a new modern art portrait with all the layers updated.

  • Make sure it is at least 700 W or 600 H.
  • If it’s bigger than 1000 W, reduce Image size to about 800W.
  • It should be a colorful photo, mostly of a person’s upper body and face. It can be a cartoon picture, just make sure it’s one with enough details & color.
