Background Photo

Copy this photo into Photoshop first (1000 x 750).

  1. Unlock the Background layer (click on the padlock icon).
  2. This changes it into “Layer 0”.
  3. Delete it.

Flip

CTRL+T and right-click > Flip Vertical.

[Enter] to apply the transformation.

Crop

Select the Crop Tool.

In the options bar, set Ratio to “4:5 (8:10)”

Move it over a little to the left like this…

[Enter] to apply the cropping.

More Water

We need more area with water, so select the Move Tool

Drag it up a bit like this (make sure see the pink guides so you’re moving it straight up and not left/right at all), or you can use your arrow keys to move it up (faster if hold SHIFT+ up arrow).

Move it up so it’s like this…

Add Photo

Copy this picture of similar water into the same Photoshop document.

CTRL+T and make it bigger, move it down so its covering the bottom and a little bit of the original photo.

[Enter] to apply.

Rename the layer ‘more water’.

Mask

Add a layer mask

Set your colors to default (D).

Select the Brush Tool – make it really big and totally soft.

Paint on the mask part of the layer and make it blended.

Person

Now copy the photo of this model into your document.

Reduce the opacity of the layer to about 60%.

Then CTRL+T and make it smaller, rotate a bit so it fits nicely.

[Enter] to apply.

Change the opacity back to 100%.

Add a mask to the layer. Paint in with a big, soft, black Brush to blend it nicely.

Boat

Copy this photo of a boat into your document.

Rename the layer ‘boat’.

First size it down and rotate it so it’s going a bit off the bottom edge (CTRL+T).

[Enter] to apply.

Mask

Add a layer mask

Select the Brush Tool – make it about 80% hardness, and size 100 to start. Start by painting out most of the water.

Now zoom in and clean up the edges. Change the size of your Brush as you go using [ and ] keys.

Zoom out. You can move/position the boat if it’s not fitting nicely..

Color Correction

Curves 1

Add an adjustment layer…

Curves

Push up from the middle to brighten it a bit…

Fill the mask part of the Curves layer active with black (CTRL+I).

Set your colors to default (D) and then switch (X) so white is the foreground color.

The with the Brush Tool, quite big and soft, paint over the face and part of the chest…

Curves 2

Add another Curves adjustment layer.

This one add 2 settings like this…

Invert the mask (CTRL+I) to fill it black. Then brush in white for the person and the boat.

Color Balance

Add another adjustment layer … Color Balance

Move the slider for Cyan to the left a bit to remove some of the redness from the person’s face.

Fill the mask with black and brush in with white on the person’s face and chest.
