Select the photo layer to start adding filters…

Go to Filter > Filter GalleryArtistic > Poster Edges … (2, 4, 2).

You should now see a Smart Filter in the Layers panel.

Go to Filter Gallery again, this time to Artistic > Cutout… settings (8, 4, 2)

Double-click on the right side of the “Filter Gallery” smart filter…

… and change the blend mode to Multiply, and reduce the opacity to 70%.

Filter: Color Halftone

Go to Filter > Pixelate > Color Halftone (6)

Double-click on the right side of the Color Halftone for the layer.

Change the blend mode to Soft Light and reduce opacity to about 60%.

Now the photo looks like this…

Isolate Person

Go into the photo smart object…

In the PSB document, start by adding a Solid Color adjustment layer; choose a medium color you like.

Add a layer mask to the photo layer.

Set your Brush to ~95% hardness, size about 50.

Use the square brackets [ and ] to make the brush smaller/bigger as you go.

Save and see how it looks in the main document.

Speech Bubble

Choose Custom Shapes … and navigate to the Speech Bubbles folder – choose one of the shapes and drag out a speech bubble like this…

Add layer style Stroke – black, thickness 10.

Now select the Text tool – set the font type to Consolas, size 36 and black.

Click in the speech bubble area; it will fill with placeholder text…

Now type out the phrase “I am Loki of Asgard, and I am burdened with glorious purpose.”

Adjust the size of the text so it all fits nicely in the speech bubble.

Click off to see how it looks.

Background

Go into the photo smart object.

Make sure no layers are active/selected.

Select the Custom Shape tool – make sure it’s set to a white fill and no stroke.

Then select one of the Sunburst options.

Click and drag it out a bit bigger than the canvas.

Move the shape layer below the photo.

Change the opacity to 50%.

Save and go back to your main document to see how it looks.

Add a different starburst shape, change the opacity to 50% and make sure it’s below the photo layer.

Save it and see how it looks in the main document.

Person Outline

Go back in the PSB file and add a layer style Stroke (black, thickness 5) to the photo layer.

If you see any extra black bits, make the mask active and paint out with a black brush any extra bits.

Save and see how it looks…

Vibrance

To have more richness to the photo, add a Vibrance adjustment layer in the PSB file and increase the saturation to about 35%.

Save it and see how it looks.

Get your project check off so far…

Change Photo

Find a photo you’d like to use and copy it into the PSB file.

CTRL+T to adjust the size and position so the person is on the left of the speech bubble…

Save it and see how it looks…

Vibrancy/Brightness

Move the new photo under the Vibrancy layer.

See how it looks (in my example it’s too dark/orange).

If that doesn’t work, hide Vibrancy and add a Brightness/Contrast layer, make the photo brighter. The amount depends on your photo.

Save and see how it looks.

Person Outline

Hide the Loki photo layer.

Add a layer mask to the new picture.

With a black Brush, paint out the background.

Add the same Stroke layer style to the new photo.
Clean up any extra bits using the black Brush on the mask.

Save it and see how it looks…

Background Color

Duplicate the Color Fill layer. Then double-click on the color square and choose a color from the new photo.

Save and see how it looks…

Change Text

Double-click on the “T” layer thumbnail and change the text to something else.

Adjust the size of the text box or the size of the speech bubble shape.
