Click on the photo below to open the full-size image, then right-click > Copy Image.

Create a new PS document (944×704).

Paste in the photo and then Save.

Rectangle

Select the Rectangle Tool.

Then go to the Options Bar at the top and:

  • set the Fill to white (or any color)
  • set the Stroke amount to 15 px
  • Set the Stroke to a light grey #e6e6e6

It should look like this…

Drag out a rectangle – adjust the tops so you can see the arm & head sticking out the top and the feet sticking out the bottom. If you need to adjust it after, use CTRL+T to resize/move it so the head and arm are popping out the top and the foot is poking out the bottom like this…

Click off in an empty area of the Layers panel. You will then see the grey outline like this…

Clipping Mask

Move the photo above the rectangle layer.

Hold ALT and hover between the photo & rectangle layers – when you see the arrow, click.

The photo should now be clipped by the rectangle below…

Popping Out

Select the photo layer and duplicate it (CTRL+J).

Go to the Properties tab on the top-right and click on Remove Background. If you get a pop-up window, just click on “Continue on device” option…

This adds a layer mask with the background painted out for you.

You should have this…

Styles

  1. Select the 3 layers: click on the top layer, hold SHIFT and click on the rectangle layer.
  2. Then CTRL+G to group them, put them into a folder.

With the folder selected, add layer style… choose Drop Shadow

Reset to default and increase the opacity to about 60, increase the size to about 30, and change the angle to top-left.

So you’ll have something like this…

And your layers should look like this…

Expand the group folder so you can see the layers inside and get it checked…
