Photo

Start by copying the photo below into a new PS document (600×700).

Rename the layer to “photo”.

Convert to Smart Object

Right-click on the photo layer or go to the “more options” button on the top right of the Layers panel. Then choose to Convert to Smart Object.

You should now see this icon on the photo layer (do not double-click it).

Adjustment: Pattern

Add a Pattern adjustment layer…

Use the drop-down menu … go to “Paper” and choose the 3rd one…

Change the layer blend mode to ‘Multiply’.

Torn Area

Insert a new layer … rename it “torn area”.

Switch colors to white is the foreground color.

Select the Brush tool…

Go to the Brushes tab in the top-right panel area … open “Torn Brushes” group…

Click on the left square bracket [ to make the brush smaller until you can see it covering the canvas, going outside the edges a bit… then click onces over the face/eyes like this…

Optional: Delete Background Layer

Click on the padlock for the Background layer to unlock it … then Delete it.

Black & White Photo

Select the photo layer, then CTRL+J to make a copy…

Drag it up to the top so it’s above the torn area layer.

Adjustment: Black & White

Go to Image > Adustments > Black & White … (default) … say OK.

Filter: Camera Raw

Then go to Filters > Camera Raw Filter … and add Grain about 30%.

Collapse the layer styles…

Clipping Mask

Hold ALT and hover between the top 2 layers, when you see the arrow, click to make it a clipping mask.

You should now see this…

Edges

Add a new layer, name it “edges”.

Hold ALT and turn it into a clipping mask.

Select the Brush tool again. With the same brush (or a different one), click near the top edge and the bottom edge in different places a few times so you have something like this:

  • adjust brush size of the brush using the square brackets [ and ]
  • adjust brush angle using left & right arrow keys.

Style: Pattern Overlay

Go to layer styles… Pattern Overlay

Choose this Paper one…

Style: Drop Shadows

Go to layer styles again, choosing Drop Shadow

  1. Reset to default, then increase the opacity to about 70% and the size to about 20px.
  1. Add another Drop Shadow style by click on the + button on the left.
  1. In the one that opens, just change the angle to -90.

It should look something like this…

So you should see 2 x Drop Shadow styles in the layers…

Get your project checked so far…

Change Photo

CTRL+S to save your file before this next step!

Double-click on the smart object icon an either of the photo layers.

This will open the linked photo in a new PSB tab.

Paste in a different photo. CTRL+T to resize it so it covers the photo completely.

Save it (CTRL+S) and go back to the main tab. You will see the photo layers reflecting the different photo now…

See how it looks; if needed, go back to the PSB tab and CTRL+T to move it so it fits nicely in the ripped area.
